How to Deal with Stress When Preparing for IIT

The most stressful moments in a student’s life are when they are preparing and giving exams. The students who are appearing for JEE, to get admission into the coveted IITs, are bogged down with exam stress more than those who are not preparing for JEE.There is no shortcut to success and hard work cannot be substituted with anything. One thing which creates a hindrance in the preparation and concentration of the students is stress.

After final exams, the thought of facing more entrance tests can be a burden. Stress can be reduced with certain changes in the student’s lifestyle.

Here are some important ways to deal with stress while preparing for IIT:

  1. Exercise regularly
    Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress. Exercising helps in the removal of stress-induced hormones and release of the good hormones. Simple exercises like brisk-walking, jogging, cycling and swimming when done 5-6 times a week for 30 minutes, will help in the reduction of stress. Exercising will also help the student stay active and alert. And an active body will lead to an alert mind.
  1. Sleep properly
    A student preparing for IIT should sleep for about 7-8 hours. Good sleep helps in the relaxation of both body and the mind. If you have a trouble sleeping, then try making some changes in your daily routine so that you get better sleep.
  1. Meditation
    Meditation enhances the relaxed state and helps keep calm. It also increases concentration power, which is of extreme importance to the students.If you are doing it for the first time, it may get a little difficult to concentrate, but the key is to practice more. Apply simpler techniques. Try deep breathing for a few minutes and chanting of religious words like OM to help meditate better.
  1. Share your thoughts and feelings
    If you are drowned with stress, it will not be beneficial in keeping it to yourself. Try discussing it people who will listen to you and who will able to understand you and give positive remedies to handle the stress. It can be friend, a supportive parent or even a counsellor.
  1. Set realistic and achievable targets
    It’s very important to be realistic when preparing for exams. Don’t ponder over why you cannot top your class, instead think of out doing your previous performance. Your real competition is with yourself.
  1. Stay calm
    Exam anxiety is not that a bad thing. A little bit of anxiety is infact good for a better performance. But care has to be taken so that it does not spiral out of control. Over anxiety leads to a situation where you exert more pressure on yourself and increase your stress levels. So try and stay calm during exams

Remember one thing – these are just exams, not a matter of life and death. It is your mind, body and soul you are investing. Don’t be too harsh on yourself.
